Banff in Winter is like Winterwonderland. Winters are generally dry making cold temperatures really enjoyable. A big plus are the blue skies for which this area is reknown and of course the perfect powder snow. The air is clear and the views are fantastic. Our snow quality is legendary as it is so low in humidity that making a snowball or snowman is just impossible as it does not stick together, real champagne powder snow. The snow is so light that you can do with your skis whatever you like while carving in “powpow”. By the way, you don’t need to lift your ski tips out of the deep snow to do a turn, as in Europe or other places in Western Canada, making skiing so easy and effortless.
We usually get 6 to 8 metres of amazing powder snow throughout the season. Skiers and snowboarders enjoy the 5 ski hills accessible from Banff.

Ski touring is addictive and we are always looking for the best snow. In my opinion the best of the best in ski touring can be found Mt Hector, Bow Summit, the Wapta Icefields, Chickadee Valley and the area around Skoki Lodge.
Do it like the pioneers and walk in snowshoes through clear air and stunning mountain panoramas. We can recommend many amazing trails and even summits to watch life from high above.
There are over 350 km of beautiful cross country trails which go as far as Mt Assiniboine or Lake O’Hara. Many fire-roads take you deep into the backcountry. The best ones are Lake O’Hara, Bryant Creek, Spray River, Red Earth Creek.
Ice-climbing is big in this valley with the most re-known frozen waterfall being on Cascade Mountain, the Professor Falls, Johnston Canyon, Marble Canyon and the 2 on Mt Bourgeau.
Ice-skating is one of Canadian’s favourite pastimes at the Banff Springs Hotel, on Bow River, Johnson Lake and of course the famous Lake Louise site.
Many guests come to admire the breathtaking mountain scenery in the National Park. Many trails are easily accessible and take you to stunning mountain sceneries and rustic or exciting mid-way shelters. Do it like the pioneers and travel by dog sled along frozen lakes and old forest or just enjoy playing in the Park.
